RESULTS of the State of the Game Survey: September 2020

Hi all,

It’s time for the results!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond - we had over 1,750 responses, which is great! These insights wouldn’t be possible without your time and support.

As always, neither myself nor this survey are associated with Intelligent Systems or Nintendo in any way. Please direct feedback about the game itself to the official channels.

Now let’s get into it!

~ Intelligent Systems Approval Ratings ~

The approval ratings are calculated by the proportion of Approve responses compared to the number of both Approve and Disapprove responses.

Percent who approve of the way Intelligent Systems is handling:
  • 74.6% - The addition of new heroes / characters to the game (+11.9)
  • 69.4% - The gacha mechanics and summoning banners (+5.5)
  • 59.2% - The story/plot (+9.4)
  • 85.2% - Unranked PvE game modes (Hero Battles, Forging Bonds, Tactics Drills, Lost Lore, Hall of Forms) (-1.2)
  • 50.7% - Ranked PvE game modes (Voting Gauntlets, Tempest Trials, Grand Conquest, Allegiance Battles, Rokkr Sieges, Mjolnir's Strike) (-2.6)
  • 34.6% - Arena (-6.2)
  • 48.0% - Arena Assault (+6.7)
  • 45.8% - Aether Raids (+12.7)

40.5% believe Intelligent Systems cares about its Free to Play userbase (up 10.1% from the last survey), while 34.7% do not. This continues the upward trend from the previous survey, bringing us to 8.8% down from where we were before the February drop).

42.9% approve of the way Intelligent Systems is handling Fire Emblem: Heroes as a whole (up 14.8% from the last survey), while 16.9% disapprove. This continues the upward trend from the previous survey, bringing us to only 2.5% down from where we were before the February drop).

A NOTE ABOUT METHODOLOGY: The overall approval ratings question above has traditionally been the exact percent of Approve responses, as a proportion with both Neutral and Disapprove responses. Note that this is different than the way approval is calculated for individual modes (the proportion of Approve responses compared to the number of both Approve and Disapprove responses), where Neutral responses are excluded. The difference in calculation has continued this way in order to maintain comparability with previous survey results.
For comparisons sake, the overall approval rating trend going by raw Approval percentage over the last 4 surveys is: 50.6% (Dec) -> 22.9% (Feb) -> 28.1% (Apr) -> 42.9% (Sept)
Whereas the overall approval rating trend going by proportion of Approve/Disapprove with the Neutrals excluded over the last 4 surveys is: 82.2% (Dec) -> 41.0% (Feb) -> 51.3% (Apr) -> 71.7% (Sept).

  • Full results here: [Graph].

“What would be the best Harmonized Hero (a pair of two heroes from different games) and why?”:

Rather than selecting a subset of responses this time, the link below is to a google sheet of almost all unique responses. I cleaned it up a little bit to remove “idk” type answers, duplicates, and partial string duplicates, so don’t worry if you don’t see your exact response in it.

[Full Responses].

~ Feedback ~

As always, I received lots of great feedback, both in your survey responses and in the thread itself. A heartfelt thank you to all participants for your encouragements and criticisms - these surveys wouldn’t be where they are without your feedback. But it’s not all serious; feedback messages also included:

  • #FloofMomGang #GiveLeoAGoodFuckingAltForOnce #NowiRefineWhen #TelliusNewHeroesPlz #ElinciaResplendentWhen #JusticeForDedue #PleaseRemoveLChromInstysIAmBeggingYouICantLiveLikeThisAnymore
  • “There once was a CYL4 banner / That hit my orbs hard like a hammer / The very next day / FloomMom Duo came our way / Now I'm stuck bartering with a loan planner”
  • bonk, go to survey jail”
  • “Am I also allowed to put in "Norne and Azura" for a Harmonized Hero pair? No reason.”
  • “Brace yourself. Winter (armours) are coming!” “Brave Hector's refine has made me so very happy with it's inclusion. Go shove your bow up your butt Legendary Chrom.”
  • “Give me villager alts or give me death”
  • “I expect the next survey to come with +12 to attack, null follow up, and special cooldown reduction.”
  • “The true best Harmonized Hero would be Azura and Roy since it would make me uninstall the game and never want to play a gacha ever again”
  • “My headcanon for the dream storyline is that the evil fairies have the Summoner off picking up pebbles that look like orbs. Fredrickson would be proud.”
  • “Where's the most wanted unit to add to the game question so I can shout my want for Seteth into the void?”
  • “I no longer dab, for Legendary Seliph has finally appeared.”
  • And greetings from Argentina, the Bahamas, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Ireland, Russia, South Korea, Sweden, the UK, Vietnam, the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, Toronto, and St. Louis, as well as from many fictional locations!
And some personal/meta comments:
  • “Any chance we end up seeing another Super Serious Survey in the not-so-distant future?” -> I could not believe it’s been over a year since the last one! We’ll have to do one soon!
  • “Feels like the end of an era, not having to count all my five stars” -> I know, right? I may have it return in a side survey for the most hardcore of respondents at some point, since some people are asking about it and it would be good to get data on it every once in a while.
  • “I was looking through your Nornes skills and saw you haven't given her live for bounty yet! It's the best skill for her, what are you doing!?” -> I am a fraud :( I have given her Live for Honor though :P
  • “What do you hope for in FEH?” -> Norne alt, Resplendent Jaffar, and Shamir
  • Multiple people mentioned that they had returned after a long break and were surprised to see Norne instead of Azura! Welcome back!
  • I also missed a bunch of other possible Trait Fruit nicknames, which I knew would inevitably happen. Sorry!

Note: Please don’t ask me to feature your feedback comment; it’s the only guaranteed way to not have your comment added!

Finally, the suggestion to have separate options for serious vs non-serious feedback was a good idea, I’ll try that out on the next survey!

~ Closing Remarks ~

If you missed out on responding to this survey when it was available, consider subscribing to FEHSurveys. This subreddit serves as a place to organize FE:H-related surveys, make new releases more visible, and make it easier for users to see when surveys are active.

Thanks again to everyone who participated! I hope you find the results interesting, and if there’s anything else you think can be discovered from the data, let me know and I’ll do my best to oblige!

[Support] ArmoryCrate Privacy Concerns - Unexplained Disk access.

Note - if there is a way to control system performance (CPU Freq, etc) without using AC that'd be grand.
Model is Tuf Gaming FX505DT. AC is up to date, freshly reinstalled to make sure this was a pure version of the software.
I have been troubleshooting some performance issues on m y NAS. In chrome, I had (when they system was installed) been storing all my downloads on a mapped drive to the nas. I changed that a while ago. Today I used Wireshark to resume troubleshooting and noticed constant traffic to the NAS, iterating through files in that directory. Looking in Procmon64, i notice that the action is coming from ArmoryCrate.
Looking through the app, i unchecked the "Auto Scan games" option, and I don't see others. I can't think of any good reason why this app should be digging through my downloads folder - constantly.
Until now, i've been reasonably happy with this laptop. After my last two Asus models I was very, very hesitant to buy a new one - both previous ones had serious flaws (mainly in how the power input jack was extremely flimsy).. But if Armory Crate is just spyware no matter how benign, That'll be the end of me ever trusting ASUS again.
App version is 3.0.4.0
I told it to save a log, but its in binary, unsure what it's supposed to be read in. Pulling it up in a hex editor gave no clues, and a quick google search didn't help.
I've removed all the files from that directory now.
Edit:
the executable reading the files is:
C:\Program Files\ASUS\ARMOURY CRATE Service\ArmouryCrate.UserSessionHelper.exe
and it has some creepy dlls like:
AsEncryptHelper.dll Asustek computer inc 3.0.1.0 5/9/20 vir18 10:43:01 AM
Program stack includes
14 AC_FDSPlugin.dll QueryLibrary + 0x6e83 0x7ffecd64d0e3 C:\Program Files\ASUS\ARMOURY CRATE Service\AC_FDSPlugin\AC_FDSPlugin.dll
There's also httputility.dll and a virutaldriveplugin.dll.. what is this app doing?
The one hit i get for that file is something in russian from a EA gaming support group.
Again, this is a fresh install of armorycrate.. ran the usual malware scans as well.

MAME 0.205

MAME 0.205

With Christmas just over, it’s time for the final MAME release for 2018, and what a year it’s been! Before we move on, let’s pause and recap some of the significant milestones from the past twelve months:
MAME 0.205 is no different. Newly supported arcade systems include Unico’s Magic Purple, and Visco’s never-before-seen prototype Pastel Island. The latter ties in nicely with improved video emulation for the SSV platform (yes, this fixes other long-standing glitches, too). Newly playable machines include Konami’s Tobe! Polystars, Evil Night and Total Vice. Yes, Konami M2 emulation is finally here! Be aware that there’s still a lot of room for performance optimisation on this system.
Putting arcade systems aside for a moment, this release includes support for Dance Dance Revolution Strawberry Shortcake, and the Nintendo Game & Watch titles Oil Panic and Squish. Interestingly, there are no other emulators or simulators for Squish, and it hasn’t been included in any of Nintendo’s Game & Watch collections. It seems to draw inspiration from the Famicom game Devil World.
There are hundreds more Commodore 64 cassettes in the software list now, and quite a few more BBC ROMs as well. Software lists have been added for the Nascom computers, along with updates to the boot ROM choices and better keyboard emulation. We’ve also created a skeleton driver and documented the known software for the Chinese Monon Color console. In a last-minute addition we added support for new version 2 .WOZ floppy images on the Apple II family.
Of course, there are lots more additions and improvements that you can read about in the whatsnew.txt file, or you can get the source and Windows binary packages from the download page and try it out yourself. Enjoy the rest of the year, and all the best in 2019 from all of us at MAMEdev!

MAME 0.196

MAME 0.196

MAME 0.196, our March release, is here just in time for Easter, and it’s packed with all the goodness you’ve come to expect. In a very exciting development, Team Caps0ff have extracted the C-chip data for Volfied, Superman, Rainbow Islands, and most importantly, Bonze Adventure. This cleanly fixes some of the most long-standing emulation issues in MAME. The improvements to Sega Model 2 have continued, with Virtua Fighter 2 and Motor Raid now considered working. Other Model 2 games are greatly improved as well.
For fans of 8-bit home computers, MAME 0.196 has improved ZX Spectrum family emulation, fixing many graphical glitches. A QuikLoad option has been added to several CP/M-80 machines, allowing .COM files to be loaded directly after the operating system has booted. Emulated IEEE-488 (GPIB) can now be tunnelled over sockets, opening up the possibility to simulate peripherals outside MAME. Interpro progress has continued, and is now at the point where you can boot the rebuild floppy.
Other new working arcade games include Big Buck Hunter, an older joystick-controlled version of Ghox, and a rare unprotected version of Opa Opa. With some fixes to our vector maths, War: The Final Assault is working, and Gunpey has been made playable using decompressed sprite data extracted from a working board. New LCD hand-helds include Dennis the Menace, Double Dragon 3, Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, The Addams Family, The Flash, and X-Men - Project X.
In an emulation first, MAME 0.196 supports QSound DSP emulation. For now, it’s only enabled for the vgmplay driver by default, and it requires a fairly fast computer to emulate at full speed. It will be enabled by default when system requirements are a bit more modest. The SH-4 recompiler has been enabled by default for Dreamcast-derived systems, giving substantial performance improvements.
Of course, there are plenty of other improvements. As always, source and Windows binaries are available from the download page.

High Sierra won't launch with Nvidia Web Drivers, only with OS Default ones

Hello there,
This is my first Hackintosh and I will listen to all the recommendations of this community.
I have created a bootable USB with macOS High Sierra Installer using Unibeast and successfully managed to install macOS High Sierra on my HDD. Posteriorly, I used Multibeast for the post installation.
The problem is that I can’t manage to activate my Nvidia GTX 970. I only get in the section “About my MAC” display: 5mb, instead of Nvidia GTX 970 4GB. Thus, I tried to install the Nvidia web drivers of my build(17G65) right after using Multibeast and unfortunately, after rebooting, it keeps on the macOS default drivers instead of changing into Nvidia Web Driver. Doing some research I found my problem may be associate with the Problem 6 of this thread: https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/solving-nvidia-driver-install-loading-problems.161256/#Problem6 (with clover r_5045 and an older version r_4487)
But, guess what, after doing all the steps it didn’t work too. However, instead of giving up I kept investigating what the issue could be or at least an association and I found that whenever I try to boot macOS with clover, there’s this default setting of nv_disable=1. So, I unchecked it. Yet the nvidia drivers won’t load! Another option in the boot arguments is “Use Nvidia Web driver(nvda_drv=1)”(This all is from the Clover boot menu, not from the Clover Configurator). Which I activate but then it doesn’t work neither. Moreover I read somewhere that If I am using Nvidia Web Driver in System Parameters in config.plist that I don’t need to activate “nvda_drv=1” option, but I don’t know if that’s true. To get a more bigger view of what I’m talking about I tried with nv_disable=1(one time enabled the other time disabled) and nvda_drv=1(one time enabled the other time disabled disabled). But I never tried with both of them checked off.
Another method I tried was https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/nvidia-releases-alternate-graphics-drivers-for-macos-high-sierra-10-13-6-387-10-10-10-40.255913/ , still it didn’t work.
I tried getting the Lilu.kext and the NvidiaGraphicsfixup.kext but I can’t find this last one. Maybe they stopped working. ----------------------------------------------------------- Kext list on Other folder inside my EFI: FakeSMC.kext Lilu.kext ------------------------------------------------------------ Drivers list: ApfsDriverLoader.efi, AppleImageCodec.efi, AppleKeyAggregator.efi, AppleKeyFeeder.efi, AppleUITheme.efi, AudioDxe.efi, CsmVideoDxe.efi, DatahubDxe.efi, EmuVariableUefi.efi, EnglishDxe.efi, Fat.efi, Firmware.efi, FSInject.efi, HashServiceFix.efi, NvmExpressDxe.efi,OsxFatBinaryDrv.efi, OsxLowMemFixDrv.efi, PartitionDxe.efi, Ps2MouseDxe.efi, SMCHelper.efi, UsbKBdxe.efi, Vboxext2.efi, Vboxext4.efi, VboxHfs.efi, VboxIso9600.efi.
My Bios settings are the following:
-XHCI: enabled
-Boot mode select: UEFI
-CFG-Lock: disabled
VT-d Tech: Disabled. ------------------------------------------------------------- My system:
Nvidia MSI GTX 970
I3 8350K
MOBO: Z370-A-PRO

I’m also attaching my config.plist. My only hope is on you, I can’t find anything more on the internet.
Thank you.

MAME 0.205

Of course, there are lots more additions and improvements that you can read about in the whatsnew.txt file, or you can get the source and Windows binary packages from the download page and try it out yourself. Enjoy the rest of the year, and all the best in 2019 from all of us at MAMEdev!
